WATERTOWN HOCKEY LEARN TO PLAY PROGRAMS

USA Hockey Try Hockey for Free

Ages: 4-10

USA Hockey’s Try Hockey for Free event is designed for kids ages 4-10 to try out hockey in a fun, no-pressure environment. Kids will learn what it’s like to skate on the ice with a hockey stick and have the opportunity to shoot pucks and learn from Watertown Lakers’ Hockey players and coaches. Come out to this free event and experience the fun for yourself! Skates and helmets will be provided by the Watertown Hockey Association, or bring your own if you have them.

Learn to Play Program in Partnership with the NHL, NHLPA & USA Hockey

Laker Hockey 10U Developmental Program


Ages: 5–10 (Birth years 2015-2020)

Continue, or start, your child’s hockey journey in a fun, welcoming, and low-pressure environment. Try Laker Hockey is the perfect first step for kids ages 5 to 10, whether they're brand new to skating or already comfortable on the ice. This revamped program is part of the NHL's Learn to Play initiative, designed to make hockey more accessible for families by providing equipment, coaching, and a structured path into the sport.

What to Expect:

  • Fun practices focused on learning to skate and basic hockey skills

  • USA Hockey-certified coaches and volunteers trained to work with beginners

  • A flexible program designed for both new and returning players

  • A supportive atmosphere that emphasizes effort, teamwork, and confidence

What’s Included:

  • New players receive a full set of brand-new head-to-toe hockey equipment to keep.

  • Returning players may borrow gear from the Watertown Hockey Association for a small rental fee

  • USA Hockey membership included in first session

  • 16 on-ice practices per session (2x/week, Monday & Thursday)

  • Option to continue into local league play after completing the program

Season Schedule:

  • Session 1: Oct 16 – Dec 4

    • Registration Closed

  • Session 2: Dec 8 – Jan 29

    • Registration deadline Nov 28

  • Session 3: Feb 2 – Mar 26

  • Days: Mondays and Thursdays

  • Time: 6:30 - 7:15pm

Program Costs:

  • First-time players: $300 (includes brand-new equipment + USA Hockey membership + registration fee for first session)

  • Returning players: $100 per session

  • Equipment Rental for returning players (if needed): $70 for full gear, $30 for skates (use through March 31)

  • Equipment checkout date: TBD

WEE WOBBLERS HOCKEY

Ages: 4–6 (Born 2019-2021)

 

Wee Wobblers Hockey is an opportunity for youth ages 4-6 as of Dec 31 to learn the basics of skating and using a hockey stick. Players will wear skates and a helmet, provided as needed by the Watertown Hockey Association. The purpose of the program is to create an environment of play to foster the development of skills necessary to pursue playing hockey for fun or at a competitive level. 

 

Dates: 

First Session: Nov 3 - Nov 24 (Monday and Thursday)

Second Session: January 8 - 29 (Monday and Thursday)

 

Times: 6:30 - 7:15pm

Equipment provided at the start of the first session.

Location: Prairie Lakes Ice Arena

Program Fee: $35 per session
