Learn to Play
Begin, or continue, your child’s hockey journey in a fun, welcoming, and low-pressure environment. Learn to Play is the perfect first step for kids ages 5 to 10, whether they're brand new to skating or already comfortable on the ice. This program is part of the NHL's Learn to Play initiative, designed to make hockey more accessible for families by providing equipment, coaching, and a structured path into the sport.
What to Expect:
- Fun practices focused on learning to skate and basic hockey skills
- USA Hockey-certified coaches and volunteers trained to work with beginners
- A flexible program designed for both new and returning players
- A supportive atmosphere that emphasizes effort, teamwork, and confidence
What’s Included:
- New players receive a full set of brand-new head-to-toe hockey equipment to keep.
- Returning players may borrow gear from the Watertown Hockey Association for a small rental fee
- USA Hockey membership included in first session
- 16 on-ice practices per session (2x/week, Monday & Thursday)
- Option to continue into local league play after completing the program
Ages
This program is designed for boys and girls ages 5-10, but may be expanded to younger or older players depending on skills and experience.
When
Practices are held twice per week for 45 minutes each.
Where
All sessions with be on the Driscoll Rink at the Prairie Lakes Ice Arena. Players may use locker rooms 6 and 7 for dressing before practice.
Cost
For new players, the cost of this program is $300, which includes 8 weeks of practices, USA Hockey membership and a full set of gear.
Returning players may enroll for $100 for the 8 week session. Players would also need to sign up for a USA Hockey membership.
Extra Costs
Returning players or players who do not have gear may rent gear from WHA. This is a one time rental that covers all enrolled sessions through March 31.

- $30 for skates
Equipment checkout will be on the first day of the scheduled session, 1 hour before practice begins.
